CAMPER

About CAMPER

CAMPER (Contemporary Art Public Exhibition Rig) is a 1975 Dodge Empress motor-home, modified to become a portable public exhibition and project space.  CAMPER’s mandate is to investigate the places where art, the road, education, and recreation meet, and to explore these intersections in an inclusive, participation-oriented manner that fosters public engagement and appreciation of contemporary art practices.

After three successful years of the popular Patch Project, in 2009 CAMPER was reinvented as a studio for artists, hosting three thematic residencies, entitled TR:AFICC.

During the summer months these residencies provide a space for artistic exploration and public engagement by contemporary artists.

About Celebration of the Bow River 2010

TRUCK Contemporary Art in Calgary is excited to announce our 2010 CAMPER lineup. Programmed in close collaboration with the City of Calgary Public Art Program’s six-part public art series entitled Celebration of the Bow River 2010, TRUCK will be hosting three of these projects as artist residencies out of our Contemporary Art Mobile Public Exhibition Rig.

The inspiration for this temporary public art series comes from the award-winning 2007 Utilities and Environmental Protection (UEP) Department Public Art Plan. This public art plan is founded on the principle that public art, in collaboration with other disciplines, can create remarkable places that encourage sustainability and stewardship of the environment.

Each artist will create a public art piece that offers creative ways to develop the public’s appreciation, understanding, and connection to the Bow.

The river is a shared resource that connects Calgarians through providing clean drinking water, and offering a communal gathering place. Celebration of the Bow River 2010 will engage and inspire, building upon the public’s understanding of the river and our collective relationship with the watershed.
