This August is going to pack a punch! A number of exciting events are coming up next month, in association with our current Main Space exhibition, Chambers’ Ring by Lisa Lipton. Proudly supported by Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Calgary Arts Development, City of Calgary, EMMEDIA, Calgary Boxing Club, Rogelio Boxing and Carvel Creative.

SCREENING: RIGHT TO FIGHT

Join us for a special screening of Right to Fight, by Georgina Cammalleri, a powerful documentary that chronicles the rise of women’s boxing and the trailblazing fighters who took on a sexist system and won. Through rare archival footage and raw, unfiltered storytelling, witness how boxers like Marian “Lady Tiger” Trimiar, Cathy “Cat” Davis, and Pat “Liberation” Pineda broke barriers and changed the game forever.

CHAMPIONESS is an electrifying performance that combines boxing with western contemporary, street, and latin dance to explore notions of identity and mental health. SaMel Tanz reflects on the power of solidarity amongst women as they face fears, the constant grind, and navigate life-changing experiences, challenging society’s perceptions of winners and losers.

CHAMBERS’ RING
Exhibition: June 20 – August 30, 2025
Chambers’ Ring explores the history, spectacle, and materiality of boxing. Through the lens of media archaeology and process art, the work analyzes the rhythmic active body, how its perception is influenced via the mediation of technology, as well as the rules and formalized structures of game.

Lisa Lipton is visual artist and musician whose practice is rooted in performance, sculpture, installation and film. Her work investigates the impact of popular culture and media on concepts of memory, futurity and identity. She has exhibited her work nationally and internationally and her nominations include both the short and longlists for the Canadian Sobey Art Award prize. Originally from Kjipuktuk/Halifax, Nova Scotia, Lipton is currently based in Mohkínstsis/Calgary, Alberta, where she is an Associate Professor in Sculpture at the Alberta University of the Arts.
