CAMPER ARTIST IN RESIDENCE: Sarah Holtom

CAMPER, a converted 1975 Dodge Empress motor home, will be parked on the corner of Stephen Avenue and First street SW, from August 1 – August 5, 2006, playing host for Sarah Holtom’s exciting portrait project. Holtom, received her undergraduate degree in drawing from the Alberta College of Art and Design in 2004, where she developed an efficiency and unique style for portrait painting from live sittings.  This summer, with the generous support of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Sarah Holtom will be painting 100 portraits of Calgarian Artists of all genres and disciplines. This ambitious project will find its subjects through a network of invitations into the local arts community, branching off into several degrees of separation. By inviting 3 initial artists, and asking each to invite 3 more, ad infinitum, Holtom hopes to cull personalities of the Calgary scene through the more personal and social inter-connections that weave throughout Calgary’s strong and vibrant community. Subjects are invited to dress up, bring props and backdrops to help personalize CAMPER for their sitting. Each 12” x 12”, oil on masonite portrait, will be painted in 2 to 3 hour-long sittings, culminating in a final catalogue of 100 artist portraits intended for completion by the artist this Fall. TRUCK is pleased to provide CAMPER as a studio space for Sarah Holtom’s exciting project, where she will be making appointments between 10am and 5pm, and will be painting live for public viewing and interaction until August 5, 2006.

Please join us at CAMPER on Stephen Avenue into the evening on First Thursday, August 3, 2006 for a reception with the Artist.

All are welcome, admission is FREE.

CAMPER (Contemporary Art Mobile Public Exhibition Rig), is TRUCK’s new mobile project space, a converted RV bringing art to the public and the public to art. Investigating the place where art, education, the road, and recreation meet, it will explore this intersection in a way that encourages participation, raises awareness, and fosters education of contemporary art practices.
