Artist Statement: In 1998, I became interested in proxemics and began using within my art practice. There are four distances associated with proxemics - Public (25’ - 10’), Social (10’ - 6’), Personal (6’ - 1.5’) and Intimate (1.5’ - contact). I focus on the intimate distance, as I believe the creation and observation of art to be an intimate process. I feel that large-scale work tends to push the viewer back, consequently forcing the viewer to engage the work on a social (and sometimes public) level. My goal is to invite the viewer in, allowing whomever it is to engage the work intimately. While the subject matter changes from time to time, my work has always been about relationships. The relationships I address are, primarily, between the viewer and the work, but also the formal relationships in art (positive/negative space and colour) and the relationship one has with everyday life. - Ryan Statz |
