Oh, Canada!

Its character, rumoured to be something between that of Great Britain and that of the United States, has been said to suffer from a lack of exact definition, usually described by what it is not.

Dave and Jenn draw the parallel that they, being emerging artists, just out of Art College, also suffer from a lack of exact definition. To correct their conundrum, they search for identity and sense of home through representations of locale, narrative, whimsy and the mechanics of play. These are the necessities of their daily work. Their practice is a continual process by which their travels, scrap images, vague memories and “the everyday” argue and wrestle with a communal aesthetic.

Dave and Jenn believe that landscape is inherently subjective, rife with allegory by virtue of being apprehended or created by one or more individual mind-sets. The Canadian landscape, as imagined by these two, becomes a playground in which their identities as individuals and artists are first distorted and then recreated as a new composite, a Canadian “Dick and Jane”. Dave and Jenn are the protagonists in this continuous personal meta-narrative. By relinquishing their individual identities in favour of a team moniker, they are allowed greater freedom and fluidity in traversing their campy-cabin aesthetic.

By conflating features of the real and the fantastical in the “Adventures of Dave and Jenn”, these two unlikely heroes are propelled through their imagined territories of regional “Canadiana”, the art world, and a childhood fantasy in which they are happily situated as the main characters.
